What does Ukraine need to win the war?

What does Ukraine need to win the war? – asks Dr. Sebastian Rejak, Director of AJC Central Europe, in conversation with Vasyl Zvarych, Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland. The answer: continued military aid, sanctions against Russia and economic investment in Ukraine after the war, as well as unwavering political support.
First and foremost Ukraine needs military support – Ambassador Zvarych underscored. While allies have provided a wide range of military equipment to Ukraine, what is still needed are battle aircraft.
“Ukraine should receive weapons and military support timely, it will save lives.”
Regarding economic support, Kyiv’s main goal is to keep microeconomic stability in Ukraine counting on the support of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and all partners in the G7 countries. Ukraine has already established long-term and short-term recovery plans, but the cost of these projects is $17 billion. The country therefore is seeking partners to invest into the restoration of the economy, especially the energy sector. Finally, when it comes to political support, Ukraine fatigue shouldn’t happen.
Dr. Rejak also asked about, how an ideal victory would look like for Ukraine. The Ambassador explained, victory would mean de-occupation of the entire territory of Ukraine, within internationally recognized borders. This is supported by many international partners, including the United Nations. Only this can be the basis for future negotiations.
As far as holding Russia accountable for its actions, Ambassador Zvarych made it clear that impunity cannot be allowed. Ukraine is working hard to establish a special tribunal for the crime of aggression, that – according to the Ambassador – would fill a jurisdiction gap in the International Criminal Court.
The military and political leadership of Russia need to be brought to justice. It’s not only important in regards to this war, but also for future generations and future peace.
